Is Your Sunscreen Safe?

We all know the importance of using sunscreen to protect our skin from damage. But what if the sunscreen you’re using has chemicals in it that pose a risk to your health?

Your skin absorbs up to 60% of what you put on it.  If you are rubbing chemical sunscreen onto your skin, you may be doing more harm than good.

Sunscreen basically works by blocking ultraviolet rays, preventing damage to your skin cell DNA. There are two types of active ingredients that can be used in sunscreen to block UV rays:

1. Mineral (or physical): works by reflecting and scattering UV rays

2. Chemical: works by absorbing the UV rays, instead of reflecting or scattering them

Mineral sunscreens are safer for your health; you can read more in this great article from The Environmental Working Group (EWG). Check out the EWG’s Best Sunscreens List for a comprehensive guide to safe brands.

Of course, my favorite is Beautycounter’s Protect All Over Sunscreen. It’s light and clean feeling, with a very mild, fresh scent. I use it all the time. Even on the hottest of beach days, it prevents burning. You can still get that nice sun-kissed summer glow, without compromising your health.

Remember to live simply, make healthy choices, and have fun in the sun!
